How to use it
- Enter the bill amount. Type the total on the check before tip. The tool is currency-neutral, so it works the same whether you’re paying in dollars, euros, pounds or anything else.
- Choose a tip percentage. Tap one of the quick buttons — 10%, 15%, 18% or 20% — or type any percent you like into the Tip % box.
- Set the number of people. Leave it at 1 to tip just for yourself, or increase it to split the total evenly across the group.
The three result cards update instantly: the tip amount, the total bill (bill plus tip) and the per-person share. There’s no button to press and nothing to submit.
How the tip is calculated
The maths is simple, and seeing it spelled out makes the numbers easy to trust. The tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage: tip = bill × (percent ÷ 100). The total is just bill + tip. To split it, the total is divided by the number of people: per person = total ÷ people. For example, a bill of 60 with an 18% tip gives a tip of 10.80 and a total of 70.80; split between two people, that’s 35.40 each.
How much should you tip?
- United States: 15–20% is standard at sit-down restaurants, with 18% a safe middle ground; many people round up for great service.
- Counter service & cafés: a smaller tip, or none, is common — use a lower custom percent if you like.
- Many countries in Europe & Asia: service is often included or tipping is modest, so 5–10% (or simply rounding up) is plenty.
- Group meals: some restaurants add an automatic gratuity for large parties — check the bill first so you don’t tip twice.
Customs differ from place to place, so treat the quick buttons as a starting point rather than a rule. The goal of the calculator is to take the arithmetic off your plate so you can decide the percentage and split with confidence — even after a long dinner.
Is it private?
Yes. The Tip Calculator is plain JavaScript that runs entirely inside your browser tab. The bill amount, tip percentage and party size you enter are never uploaded, logged or stored anywhere — there are no accounts and no tracking of your inputs. Once the page has loaded you can even use it offline.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is acceptable; tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly more common in the US. Enter whichever figure you prefer in the bill box and the percentage applies to that number.
Can I use a custom tip percentage?
Yes. The quick buttons are just shortcuts — type any number into the Tip % field, including decimals like 12.5%, and the results update immediately.
What currency does it use?
None in particular — the calculator is currency-neutral. It works with the raw numbers, so read the results in whatever currency your bill is in.
Results are rounded to two decimals for display. Tipping is a personal choice — adjust the percentage to match local customs and the service you received.
